Car Rental in North Macedonia

North Macedonia has one of the smallest rental car markets in our coverage, and that is both its limitation and its charm. There are two cities where renting makes practical sense — Skopje and Ohrid — and between them you will find maybe a dozen agencies total. The international chains have a presence at Skopje Airport, but the market is dominated by local operators who compete on price. Off-season economy cars start at 10-12 EUR per day, and even in the summer peak you rarely pay more than 30-35 EUR. Prices are quoted in Macedonian Denar, but we convert everything to EUR because that is what most visitors think in. The exchange rate has been stable for years.

The country is compact enough that you can drive from one end to the other in three hours. Skopje to Ohrid is about 170 km and takes roughly 2.5 hours on the A2 and A3 roads, which are decent two-lane highways for most of the stretch. The main A1 motorway running north-south from the Serbian border to the Greek border is the best road in the country — modern, well-signed, and lightly trafficked. Once you leave the main corridors, expect narrower roads, occasional patches of rough pavement, and a driving culture that treats speed limits as suggestions. None of this is dangerous, but it is not Western European highway driving either. A compact car is fine for everything.

The real reason to rent a car here is the geography. North Macedonia is squeezed between four countries, and all four borders are within a few hours’ drive. Skopje to Thessaloniki is 2.5 hours. Ohrid to Tirana is about the same. Nis in southern Serbia is 3 hours from Skopje. Sofia is 4 hours east. This makes North Macedonia a natural pit stop on a longer Balkan road trip, or a cheap base for exploring the region. The border crossings are straightforward — passport control, maybe a car document check, usually 10-20 minutes unless you hit the Bogorodica crossing to Greece during summer holidays. Just make sure your rental agency authorizes cross-border travel, because not all of them do, and driving an unauthorized car across a border creates problems you do not want.

Rental tips for Macedonia

What to know before you sign the contract.

Documents

EU license accepted. Non-EU drivers need an International Driving Permit. Credit card required for deposit — most agencies do not accept debit cards.

Insurance

CDW included in most bookings with a 300-500 EUR deductible. Full coverage costs 5-8 EUR/day extra. The deductibles here tend to be lower than in neighboring countries, probably because the cars are cheaper too.

Tolls

North Macedonia has very limited toll roads. The main one is the Demir Kapija tunnel on the A1 motorway heading south to Greece — costs about 1.50 EUR. No vignette system.

Fuel

Euro 95 and diesel available at stations along main roads. Prices around 1.15-1.25 EUR/L — among the cheapest in the Balkans. Makpetrol is the dominant chain. Full-to-full policy standard.

Border crossing

North Macedonia is not in the EU — passport checks at all borders. Crossings to Serbia (Tabanovce) and Greece (Bogorodica) are busiest. Albanian border near Ohrid (Sveti Naum or Kafasan) is usually quick. Some agencies restrict cross-border travel to specific countries — always confirm. Fee is typically 20-40 EUR per border.
