Car Rental in Bulgaria
Bulgaria is one of the cheapest countries in Europe to rent a car, and one of the most rewarding places to have one. Daily rates start below 10 EUR in the off-season, fuel costs a fraction of what you would pay in Germany or France, and the distances are short enough that you can cross the entire country in four or five hours. We have rented in all four cities we cover here — Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, and Burgas — and every time the process was straightforward, the cars were decent, and the total bill was surprisingly low.
The road network is a mix of good and rough. The main motorways — Trakia (Sofia to Burgas), Struma (Sofia to the Greek border), and Hemus (Sofia toward Varna, still under construction in parts) — are modern, well-maintained, and mostly empty outside summer weekends. Secondary roads are another story. Mountain passes to places like Rila Monastery or the Rhodope villages can be narrow, potholed, and shared with tractors. That is part of the charm, but it does mean you should skip the cheapest subcompact if you plan to leave the highways.
Most travelers pick up at one of the four airports — Sofia (SOF), Varna (VAR), Burgas (BOJ), or occasionally Plovdiv (PDV). All have both international and local agencies. The local operators, especially Top Rent A Car and Uni Rent, tend to undercut the global brands by 20-30% while offering comparable cars. One thing to watch: make sure you buy the e-vignette before hitting the motorway. It takes two minutes online, costs 8 EUR for a week, and the fine for not having one is steep enough to wipe out your rental savings.
